As you will probably agree, the numbers of officials is decreasing year on year and it is become ever more challenging to put on a meeting. As a result, Havering AC ran an officials and volunteers day last March with an aim of developing and supporting officials of all levels and ‘training up’ volunteers to support at meetings in the field and with the setting up for a meeting. The day was a great success and we now have several new level one field officials with some looking to progress further. Following on from the success of last year, we are going to be running a similar day on Sunday 19th March with the support of Essex. This year, we have expanded and will also have sessions on track judging, timekeeping, photo finish, EDM training, Technical Manager and Clerk of Course and setting up for both the track and field. There will be a focus in the morning on the discipline specific areas and the afternoon a focus on technology and setting up for a meeting. All sessions are run by experienced officials many of whom are either tutors or judge at the highest level of our sport.
There is no pressure for anyone to become an official after the day but more to show how easy it is to step in and support when volunteers are needed at competitions. Hopefully, they enjoy their time volunteering that they may want to take their first steps on the officiating pathway. It will also give a change for our newly qualified or experienced officials to receive additional training and help to develop their confidence in a certain aspect of judging or just come along and ask questions and have conversations that are hard to have on busy competition days.
In order to make the day a success we need your help to work as collective to help to reach these people who could help us at meetings. Last year, Havering AC had 30 people attend who had varying experience as well as being from a wide of range of backgrounds. Would you be able to promote the day on your social media outlets, your club website and in your clubhouses or even through word of mouth. I have attached the leaflet and sign up links to help you do this. We can also sent you leaflets to give out and place on tables in club houses etc. If you require any leaflets free to drop my an email and I can arrange this for you. Together we can help to strengthen and add to the wonderful group of officials that we have and support our athletes to have the best experience possible at meetings.
