Ilford AC Life Member Neringa Aidietyte, age 33, is set to become the first Ilford AC member to appear in 2 Olympics (London 2012 & Rio 2016). In London she competed for her home country Lithuania in the 20 Kilometres’ Walk which was held along The Mall. From 61 starters of whom 55 finished, Miss Aidietyte came 39th in 1 hour 34 minutes & 1 second. Much later the Ilford AC athlete was promoted to 38th position after a higher-placed competitor was disqualified retrospectively. She’s been selected for Lithuania in the same event at Rio later this year. When selected in 2012 she became Ilford’s 5th Olympian after Phyllis Perkins (800 metres Rome 1960), Fergus Murray (10,000 metres Tokyo 1964), Wilbert Greaves (100 metres hurdles, Moscow 1980) and 20 Kilometres walker Roger Mills at those same games.

Miss Aidietyte was a Bethnal Green resident and popular Ilford AC member for 4 years, during which she appeared in local races, before returning to Lithuania in 2013 when offered a full-time place in her Country’s National Athletics’ Squad.

GOLD MEDAL FOR PETE RYAN

Congratulations to Battersea Park regular Pete Ryan on his M60 gold medal in the Veterans AC 5 Miles’ Road Championship, held on a on a pleasant Tuesday evening. In a 22-strong field (boosted by an appeal for more walkers to showcase our event on BBC Breakfast Time Television) Pete was 8th overall in 52.27 after a good battle with Brighton-based in-form man Dan Maskell.

Stuart Bennett & Steve Allen both appeared in guest capacity. Stuart looked good in his first appearance after injury being 3rd man home in 50.19 – 4th overall as talented Penelope Cummings of Aldershot was in front (clocking 48.15). Overall this race was “won-by-a-mile” as Ian Richards stormed around the Park in 41.05 with Belgrave Harrier Mark Culshaw 2nd in 48.14.

Steve Allen came to support our attempts at showcasing this event for television, and dead-heated with recent double-National 10K Championship medallist Sean Pender in 58.27 so securing them them 19th spot. Steve was made most welcome on his return, and in keeping with his kind reputation, gave free lifts home to fellow athletes. (His other recent paid “fares” include Fiona Bruce & Sue Johnson). Michael Croft & Dave Ainsworth officiated.

BBC presenter Mike Bushell didn’t race this time, but attempted to interview participants around the back of the course by running alongside as they raced. With a leader so far ahead it didn’t make compelling television; and a 22-strong all-veterans’ field (better than at most recent Battersea races) was soon strung out. In our Battersea Park TV race 8 years’ ago we had a number of younger walkers racing as guests, among a 49 strong total (+ 3 missing the start). For the promotion of our sport we’d have benefited from more on the road. 8 years’ ago TV coverage was screened a month afterwards. Enthusiastic organiser Dave Hoben is in contact with the BBC and will advise when this is to be seen “on the box”.

All 3 Ilford men are thanked for their support and congratulated on their efforts. Better is yet to come as active walkers are now coming back into our ranks.

This Sunday sees the BMAF 5K Road Championships at Horwich (10.35am) for which we wish the best for any who’ve entered (entries now closed).

Bookings are still being taken by Tony Maxwell for the Essex Athletes’ Reunited function at “The Cow” (Stratford Westfield Shopping Centre) on Friday 1st July from 12 noon-to-4pm.

Next day Edmund joined Steve Allen and Malcolm Martin to win M60 team Gold medals in 30 km Walk, in the process beating Olympian Christoph Hohne to become M75 Champion. A good two day’s work!

Thanks go to Jan of Knight Scientific, Jason (trainer), Fiona (physio) at the Life Centre and my Practice staff and family for their support.

Yours in sport

In the awards :

Ilford’s Dave Ainsworth won an individual silver medal in the Essex County Athletic Association’s Indoor Championships at Lee Valley Arena on Saturday afternoon when clocking 12 minutes and 3 seconds for the 1 Mile Walk. Going into the penultimate lap, Ainsworth had more-or-less settled for trying to secure a bronze medal, as the competitor ahead, Southend’s John Brock, seemed to have enough in hand to withstand any attack. That was until he was disqualified, so enabling the Ilford man to be promoted a place without actually doing much! It marks a considerable span of success at County level, as Ainsworth’s first Essex individual medal came way back in 1975 when finishing 3rd in the Essex 50 Kilometres Championship at Basildon…and now came an individual medal 41 years’ later!

The following afternoon over 8 laps of a windswept, cold and exposed Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, Ilford AC were 2nd team in the London 10 Kilometres’ Walk, behind winners Surrey Walking Club. Pride of place went to Dave Kates who led the team home in a high 6th position in 64 minutes and 59 seconds. Kates also won a prize as “1st Centurion” – a category open to those finishers who had previously completed a 100 miles! This time it was Ilford’s turn to be hampered by a crucial disqualification as veteran Ed Shillabeer fell foul of the judges with 3 laps to go, so preventing Ilford from winning the team race.

ILFORD AC WALKERS TO THE FORE
Ilford’s walkers were in action at the Lee Valley Stadium track on Easter Monday afternoon where they contested a 5,000 metres walk in pleasant conditions. From the “off” local youth prospect and favourite Callum Wilkinson of Enfield & Harringey AC, the host Club, took the lead and was never to be headed as he broke the tape in 24 minutes and 3 seconds. However he was always closely tracked by experienced Ilford protagonist Francisco Reis who clocked 24.20 for an excellent 2nd place and was already ready to pounce had the youngster’s pace flagged. An Ilford athlete had the honour of completing the frame as Pete Ryan claimed 3rd in 26.22 after holding back a determined challenge from Barnet’s Steve Allen. The pick of Ilford’s other contestants was former Scottish International Stuart Bennett who’d arrived home from holiday after an overnight flight at 4am and grabbed a few hours “shuteye” before heading to the action where he finished 7th in 28.35.
