Five members of Ilford Athletic Club travelled to the small village ofMagor in South Wales to compete in the prestigious British Masters 10K RoadRace Championships incorporated into the Magor Marsh 10K.

Battling the torrential rain around the Welsh country lanes against someof the elite of the Veterans in a field of 214 finishers the Ilford runnersacquitted themselves well.

First home for the club winning the bronze medal In the Male Veteran40-44 age category was Malcolm Muir in 29th Place overall in 36 minutes and 30seconds while still nursing a stomach injury. Next home was Terry Knightley in50th place and 9th in the Male Veteran 55-59 age category in a seasons best 38Minutes and 51 seconds. Andy Catton followed him home in 85th position in 41minutes and 39 seconds and 11th in the Male Veteran 60-64 agecategory. These three Ilford Runners Won the British Masters Gold Team Medal.

The two Ilford AC ladies were lead home by Carol Muir in her best timein months with 58 minutes and 33 seconds for 196th place and thenKim Baxter in 207th with a new Personal Best 65 minutes and 3 seconds.

British Milers Club Regional Meeting

Two track runners from Ilford AC travelled to the South London track to competein the 5000m at the latest British Milers Club event at the Sutclffe Park trackin Eltham.

They raced in the B heat which was run on good conditions at 9.30pm. LivIonita, who as just joined the club as a second claim member to compete intrack competition, went with the early fast pace but tired in the second halfof the race to finish a in a fine third spot in 16 mins 33.22 secs. Sam Rahmanran a controlled race, lapping at a consistent 80 seconds and with thesetactics moved through the field to cross the line 5th in the 13 strong race in16m 43.01s, beating his previous personal best by 18 seconds.

SwissalpineMarathon
Davos

This year the organisers put on a special new race to mark the 30th anniversaryof the Swissalpine marathon. Ilford’s Peter Spelman once again made his annualpilgrimage to the town of Davos where he was among some 943 entrants to competein this ultra event.

Billed as thehighest marathon in Europe the race involved a lot of climbing and extensivewalking along narrow paths. Running was virtually impossible except during thefirst and last sections. Peter proceeded cautiously finishing in 7 hours 27 minutes7 seconds as shown below for 464th place and 32nd in hisage category.

HemelHempstead

The IlfordAC Veteranss team travelled to Hemel Hempstead on 13 July for the last match ofthe season. A fantastic performance resulted in the team finishing 2nd on theevening.
The trackstarted with first places for Stuart Bennett (11.12.7) and Steve Uttley(10.19.5) in the 2000m walk in the 35 and 50 plus age group.
In the800m James Smith debuted in the 35 category finishing 2nd in 2.22.6. MalcolmMuir carrying an injury secured 2nd in the 40 category with a time 2.18.6. AndyCatton came down an age group to compete in the 50 category finishing 6th in2.48.2.
HenryRicketts covered the 35 age group over 200m finishing 2nd in 28.3. RohanAlexander finished 3rd in 27.2 in the 40 category. Peter Whiting gained 5thplace with 31.9 in the 50 age group while Andy Catton also placed 5th with 35.6in the 60 age group.
JamesSmith won the 3000m in 9.44.0 in his age group. Rohan Alexander completed thedistance in 11.11.8 for 4th in the 40 category. Rob Sargent came down an agegroup finishing 7th in 13.34.3 in the 50 age group. Andy Catton secured 2ndwith 12.04.6 in the 60 category.
In thehigh jump Henry Ricketts cleared 1m for 5th in the 35 category. Peter Whitingalso cleared the same height to place 6th in the 50 category. Rohan Alexanderleapt to 4m 79 for 2nd in the 35 long jump and Peter Whiting placed 3rd with 3m55 in the 50 age group. In the javelin Henry placed 4th with 25m 82 in the 35age group. Pete finished 2nd with 24m 79 in the 50 age group and Andy Cattonplaced 7th with 13m 19 in the 60 age group.
The 4 x200m relay team of Rohan, Henry, Pete and James finished 5th in a time of1.57.1.

The teamfinished 4th overall for the season. Barnet & District will go forward tothe end of season finale.

Newman Hilly 5 -ELvIS
Hainault Forest
Wednesday 15 July

There was a record field of 260 finishers for the 25th running of the Newman Hilly 5 over the trials of Hainault Forest where Ilford AC managed to field a team of 30 along with organising and marshalling the event.

Leading the way for the home club was Sam Rahman in 7th place with 29m 55s for the 5 mile course, with Paul Holloway next over the line in 30m 30s, claiming the M40 age group prize. Steve Philcox finished 13th in 30m 51s and Kevin Wotton recorded 31m 18s for 17th. Malcolm Muir, still suffering with a stomach injury, was 17th in 31m 18s and Robin McNelis closed the scorers for the mens team in 18th with 31m 42s. The men finished 2nd to the strong East London side in the ELvIS match.

Also showing good form for the men were Tony Hyde collecting the M50 prize in 32m 04s and Andy Catton who was 1st in the M60 category in 35m 10s.

Jenni Sheehan led the ladies challenge in 7th and 65th overall in 36m 37s with Bree Nordin 8th and lst F55 in 37m 22s. Mel Jones won the F45 grouping in 37m 28s as 11th lady and 79th overall. Victoria Morgan closed the Ilford scorers with 42m 49s. Like the men the female team placed 2nd behind East London.

Terry Knightley in 35th spot was 4th M50 with 33m 21s, while Julia Galea placed 4th in the f55 category in 46m 36s.

SOUTH OF ENGLAND TRACK CHAMPS BEDFORD

After his debut for Essex in the English schools champs in which the County won the overall trophy, Ahmed Abdulle continued his good form in the SoE champs at Bedford in the 3000m. Conditions very windy so a fast time out of the question. After a slow pace at the start Ahmed put in 3 fast laps which broke up the field, which rewarded him with the gold medal 1st in 9-00 minutes

Veterans AC 5km Championship
Battersea Park
Tuesday 14 July

Four Ilford AC members toed the line for this event held on the fast flat perimeter road of Battersea Park. Leading the way in 14th place was Rob Sargent in 23mins 33secs, his fastest time of the year, to take the silver medal in the M60 category. Also, winning a silver was Nicola Hopkinson, one place behind in 24m 03s with her success being in the F50 grouping. Carol Muir was another running a season best in 25th with 29m 17s, while Pam Jones recorded a new age group record of 29m 34s taking the gold medal in the F75 category,

Great Newham 10km
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
Sunday 19 July

There 9 runners from Ilford AC in the latest addition to the Great Run series, the Newham 10km. The event was held over a flat 1 lap twisty turny course around the Olympic Park and finishing with 200m of the Olympic Stadium tack. First home for the club in 36th spot was Malcolm Muir in 36mins 33 secs, which placed him 5th in the M40 group. Next home in a season’s best was Rohan Alexander in 42m 22s for 333rd and Andy catton recorded 43m 30s for 483rd and 6th in the M60 category. Steve Parker was another running his fastest time of the year in 571st with 44m 11s and 5th M55 on the day.

Billy Green recorded 51m 41s and Doris Gaga managed a personal best in the crowded race of 52m 31s. Also in action were Suki Jandu (59m 00s) Carol Muir (61m 29s) and Peter Ryan who race walked the course (presumably) in 64m 13s.

Sam Rahman kicked off the week for Ilford AC last Monday evening when he ran the 800m at the Mile End Open Meeting. He reached the bell in 65 seconds and tired a little on the second lap to record 2m 14.59secs for 5th place in a quality race.

The next night there was another open track meeting , this time at Woodford Green. On a breezy night the two Ilford runners in the 1500m were hampered by the wind. Steve Philcox recorded 4m 57s .35s and was almost matched by Tony Hyde in 4m 57.58s.
Sam Rahman was in action again, this time in the 3000m. Sam ran a well judged race and picked up the pace in the last 600m to finish 2nd in 9m 54.15s, just 0.26 seconds off this personal best.
Tuesday night also saw the 4th of the 5 race Harwich 5k series held over a blustery Promenade Course at Dovercourt where Ilford’s Tony Nixon once again demonstrated his ageless speed clocking 19.32 to take the best age related time prize for the third consecutive time. No other runner even got near his adjusted time of 14mins 44 seconds.

At the challenging off-road Thorndon Park 10km on Saturday Bill Green placed 83rd in 56m 54s in a field of 152 finishers

At the Yeovilton 5k on yet another windy Wednesday evening Ilford’s over 60

Peter Ryan crossed the line in 64th position recording 21-16 to place 6th in his age category .

Dagenham5 mileish ELvIS
Wednesday 1 July

Ilford AC were out in force for the 4th leg of this summer’s ELvIS series held on a very hot evening in the Eastbrookend Country Park in Dagenham. Leading the way for the club in the 2 lap 4.8 mile race was Malcolm Muir who finished 5th and 1st in the M40 group, despite still being troubled by a stomach problem, in 28mins 19 secs. A stride behind him was the improving Sam Rahman with 28m 20s with Kevin Wotton putting in a fine run or 8th with 29m 35s. Tony Hyde took the M50 category title in 12th in 30m 24s. Steve Philcox came home 16th in 30m 51s and Neil Crisp was 1 place and 1 second behind him to complete the scorers. The team finished 2nd in the match behind the powerful East London side.

Krystle Balogun made her first league appearance of the summer and made it count finishing 2nd lady in 32m 07s, with Jenni Sheehan backing her up in 5th spot with 36m 33s and Bree Nordin 7th and once again 1st F55 in 36m 40s. Nicola Hopkinson recorded 41m 48s to complete the scoring team who like the men were 2nd to East London.

Orion Forest Five
Saturday 4July

The second of Orion Harrier’s summer five mile off-road races was held in Epping Forest on Saturday morning. The small squad from Ilford AC were headed by Bradley Brown who came home 42nd out of the 113 finishers in 38mins 52secs. Rachel Halpin recorded 43m 09s for 70th spot, while Victoria Morgan finished in 44m 13s for 75th. Pathrose Louis was83rd in 44m 59s and Bill Green clocked 46m 39s in 92nd.

Brentwood 10km
Sunday 5th July

This years Essex 10km Championship was held in conjunction with the Brentwood 10km held on a fast rural course based in the village of Blackmore. The race took place on a surprisingly rainy morning and the Ilford AC challenge was headed by Sam Rahman in 24th spot in a new personal best of 35m 46. Next home, also recording a personal best, was Paul Holloway in 40th place in 37m 23s, while Robin McNelis placed 46th in 37m 44s.

Steve Philcox had a good run for 47th with 37m 59s and Kevin Wotton and Neil Crisp both were given 38m 23s for 56th and 57th respectively.

Bree Nordin was the first Ilford lady with 44m 41s for 152nd and 16th lady. Bree again claimed the F55 category county gold medal. Jenni Sheehan placed 25th in 45m 53s and Nicola Hopkinson was 247th overall in 50m 46s

Pam Jones took the bronze Essex medal in the F65+ group recording 62m 27s.

There were also new best times for the distance for Declan Cullen with 46m 59s and Doris Gaga in 52m 59s

Also running were: Terry Knightley ( 65th 38m 59s) Steve parker (149th 44.34) Bradley Brown (156th 44m 52s) Rob Sargent (214th 48m 31s) Bill Green (247th 50.14) and Julia Galea (317th56.06)

In the Essex county team competition the men placed 9th and the ladies 5th

There were 414 finishers.

Bewl 15
Sunday 5th July

On Sunday Ilford AC’s superveteran Graham Williams travelled to Bewl Water, in Sussex to compete in the very muddy Bewl Water 15 .Despite a torrential downpour the Ilford man was pleased to come away with a resounding success picking up the silver medal in the over 75 class.

Dulwich 5k
Thursday 25th June

Three athletes from Ilford, ventured across to South London to take part in the Dulwich 5k the previous Thursday. The field was not as strong as in former years but was still won in a brisk 16.10, by Alex Gibbins of Blackheath. Ilford were represented by Bradley Brown, and Gary Floate, making a welcome return to competition together with his wife Meredith Floate.

Bradley and Gary were close throughout the race, with Bradley just ahead for the first two laps, Gary went past Bradley at the start of lap three and held a small gap to the finish. Gary clocked 22.33 for 83rd place with Bradley close behind in 22.42 for 85th. Meredith was surprised by the fast start of the race and took a while to get into her stride, but by the third lap she was flying along and crossed the line in 34.17 for 149th.

Watford graded meeting
1st July

This was Ahmed Abdulle’s last race before going to the English Schools Athletics champs at Gateshead on the 10th & 11th July. Seeded in the A race he found the going tough at this level but still gave a good account for himself setting a new 3000m Pb of 8mins 51secs.
