ILFORD AC PRESS REPORT 31st JULY 2017

Ilford Athlete Peter Spelman has this week been competing in the ‘Swiss Alpine Davos running event’ which is a series of races and trail runs in Davos, Switzerland that is very popular for running tourists.
On Tuesday 25th July Peter ran in the 4k lake race which is held on a hilly course around the Davos lake.
In very wet and cold conditions Peter was the 3rd M65 home in a time of 25:34.

On Saturday 29th Peter took part in the K31 event which is a 31k run starting in Davos, travelling through the Wiesner viaduct before finishing in Filisur.
Peter came 25th in his age group today in a time of 3:49:10.

Sunday 30th Peter competed in his 2nd race in 2 days and third in a week when he lined up for his toughest race of the week, the D22 event. The D22 is a 22k trail run which takes in 1150m of climb.
During the race the participants have the option to shorten their distance at 9k or 15k but Peter battled through to compete the gruelling course in 3:57:00 which placed him 6th in his age group.

Southern Veterans Track and Field League
Hemel Hempstead
10th July 2017

In addition to the previous SCVAC report of 10th July, field events were also on the schedule.
Pete Whiting placed 6th in the M35 Javelin with 22m 65. Cliff Warren placed 4th in the M40 Long Jump with 4m 58. Ted Skinner’s 3m 47 in the M60 Long Jump secured first place.
Henry Ricketts cleared 1m 20 in the M35 High Jump for 8th place and Cliff’s 1m 30 in the M50 category meant that the team had won four events on the evening.

IAC finished 5th in the match and 4th overall for the season.

London Heathside go through to represent the men and Stevenage the women in the end of season finale.

Thank you to all participants and supporters. There’s plenty of time to get some good training in for next season where we will be looking to improve on this fantastic season.

Silver Starling 5k
Battersea Park

On a muggy Monday evening Steve Philcox ran in the silver starling 5k self-transcendence race at Battersea park (they have given every race in this series a name)
On a fast and flat 2 lap oval course Steve was pleased to clock a time of 17.15 finishing in 21st place and first 50 vet.

AJ Bell London Triathlon 
Excel Centre
22nd July 2017

Ilford Athlete Nicola Hopkinson competed in the gruelling ‘London Triathlon Sprint’ race at the Excel Centre in London on Saturday.
The race consists of a 750m Swim, 20k Bike Ride and ends with a 5k run.
Nicola started well with a 14:55 swim, continued in fine form for a 46:48 Bike ride and finished with a very impressive 22:31 5k to finish with a chip time of 1:30:47 after transitions to finish in 647th place and 2nd female in the 55-59 category.

Race for Life (cancer research) 5k 
Hylands Park, Chelmsford

Julie Gillender and Carol Muir both ran in the ‘Race for life’ (cancer research) 5k race at Hylands park Chelmsford.
This event has special meaning for Julie and Carol as they both lost their mums to cancer.
They both struggled a bit with the race as it was quite tough being on a cross country course that was quite muddy, both coming in at just over 30 minutes

Julie and carol would both like to thank all the club members that sponsored them as they both managed to raise over £200 between them.

ILFORD GIVE ‘EM THE OLD 1-2

Ilford AC contested the latest round of the Southern Veterans Track & Field League on a warm Monday evening at the delightfully situated Hemel Hempstead track.
The Cricklefields-based Club got off to a great start as maximum points were secured in the opening event, a 2,000 metres’ walk, when new signing Mark Culshaw was a comfortable victor in an impressive 11 minutes and 3 seconds – only a day after his top performance over 20 kilometres in the Midlands. Snapping at his heels was Walking team manager and former Scottish International Stuart Bennett who clocked 11.13 for second place.
Both Ilford athletes were well clear of the rest, each being top of their age-groups.

Neither man was finished with athletics after completing their walk as Culshaw re-appeared to run in both 200 where he was 7th in 35.3 and 800m where he was 5th in 3:19.3 , while Bennett also showed in the 800 metres finishing 6th in 3:24.8 and ran a leg in Ilford’s 4 x 200 metres squad which finished in 2mins 6.9 secs.

Also on the night Anthony Young continued his fine form for the club running in both the 800m in 3:06.6 and the 3000m in 13.36 finishing 7th in both.
Three athletes competed in the 200m event, before all appearing again with Stuart Bennet in the 4 x 200m relay, they were Cliff Warren 4th in 28.1, Henry Rickets 3rd in 28.8 and Ed Skinner 4th in 33.3.

VAC 5km Road Race Championships and 5 Mile Race Walk
Battersea Park

There were two runners and one walker from Ilford AC at the Veterans Athletic Club Championships, who organise events for athletes over 35 in London and the South East
Both events were held on the fast course in Battersea park on a very wet evening with heavy rain falling throughout the event.

In the 5k road race Steve Packer placed 18th out of the 43 entrants in 21 mins 46 secs, which placed him 2nd in the M60 category for the silver medal. Ed Skinner came home in 26th, despite being troubled by a knee injury, in 23m 39s for 4th
in the M60 group.
In the race walk Ilford athlete Mark Culshaw had a great victory, coming in first place in a time of 47:53

Wednesday 12 July

The fourth round of the 2017 ELvIS competition was held over the trials of Hainault Forest in the Ilford Ac annual Hilly 5 race, which is held in memory of Ilford official Newman Sargent. The large field of 287 included 28 runners from the home club. Ahmed Abdulle continued his fine form to dominate the event and win by over a minute in 26 mins 37secs. He was backed up by Tom Gardner in 3rd spot with 28mins 38secs and Steve Philcox in 10th in 29mins 55secs and 1st M50.
Neil Crisp placed 2nd in M50 category and 22nd overall with 31m 44s with Seb Parris next over the line just 6 seconds behind. John Crawley, making his club debut, competed the scoring six in 30th 32m 28s. Overall in the team event the club finished second to East London Runners squad who have good strength in depth.

Bree Nordin led the Ilford ladies team finishing 11th female and winning the F55 age category. Backing her up were Nicola Hopkinson as 16th female and 3rd in the F45 group with 39m 04s and Dianne Crisp who was 23rd female in 41m 03 and 3rd in the F55 group. The team was rounded out by Carlie Qirem in 41m 03s for 25th in the ladies event. On the night the team finished 5th in the team placings

Terry Knightley recorded 33m 54s in 38th and placed 3rd in the M50 category, while in 51st with 35m 16s was Rhoan Alexander. Dennis Briggs placed 74th in 36m 47s and Declan Cullen was 2nd M60 in 79th with 37m 25s.
There was an encouraging run from Adnan Karim in 105th with 39m 14s in only his second run for the club..

Two of the clubs race walkers Mark Culshaw and Stuart Bennett changed code and ran the race to finish 144th (42.27) and 173rd (44.38) respectively

Eversley 3k
Tuesday 4th July

The Eversley 3k is hosted by Pitsea Running club to raise funds for the Eversley School and is held on the first Tuesday of May, June and July.
The course is a 2 lap off road multi terrain course with steep hills.
Julys event attracted 110 runners. Ilfords Tony Hyde took the lead after 600m, a lead which he held on to, to win in a time of 11:30.

​​English Schools 7th/8th July 

As a reward for his excellent run in the Essex schools championship, Aaron Samuel was rewarded by selected by Essex to compete in the English Schools Championship last weekend.
This Championship, took place in Birmingham, after a long drive up on the Thursday Aaron’s was the very first one at 10am on Friday morning. There were two heats of 15 athletes and only the first four in each heat were guaranteed to make it to the final. Aaron was in the leading group in heat one, and managed to finish in 4th place. In qualifying he not only ran a personal best time of 4.11.86, but broke the Ilford Under 15 club record for the third time this season.
The final was at midday the next day, and contained 11 of the fastest under 15’s in the country this year, the initial was fairly slow and the field was fairly bunched for first two laps, Aaron had a good position, but was running fairly wide. At the bell a group of four had broken clear, and Aaron was leading the chasing group. The eventual winner was Ethan Hussey of Nor​th​ Yorkshire in a time of 4.07.63.
Aaron eventually came 8th in a time of 4.13.17, just getting to final of National championship and then setting a personal best in the heats, is a brilliant achievement, for somebody who has only being running for 18 months.

Regents Park Run through 5kSaturday 8th July
Carlie Qirem chalked up another PB this weekend finishing 23rd of 191 runners in a time of 24:15, a time that also ensured Carlie was the 2nd fastest female on the night.

Southend Half Marathon
Sunday 9th July

The Southend Half Marathon is a 2 lap, traffic free run on a route that finishes along the Southend Coastline.
On a hot Sunday morning Breege Nordin of Ilford put in a fine run and was pleased to finish in 1:38:40 for 158th place

 

British 10k
Sunday 9th July

The British 10k is one of the largest 10k’s in Britain attracting over 14,000 runners.
The race takes runners through Central London, traffic free, and takes in Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, The London Eye and
Houses of Parliament.
En route the runners pass several bands and large union jacks draping the streets.
Sundays race was held on a glorious hot sunny day that suited the spectators (or spectathletes as the official guide called them) far more than it did the runners.
Ilfords Billy Green was pleased with his time of 49:34 in the conditions, a time that put him in 870th place

BMAF (British Masters) 20km Racewalk Championships:

Ilfords Mark Culshaw traveled up to Coventry for the British Masters Racewalk Championships this weekend and finished 3rd overall and 2nd in the 50 – 55 age group with a time of 2:08:42

Carlie Qirem continued her fine form this year by achieving a PB in this pleasant race at Londons Victoria Park.
Carlie was 142nd in a time of 48:54.
There were 360 finishers.

Fast Friday
Walthamstow
Friday 30 June

This track meeting is a series of 5000m and 10000m designed to encourage fast track running.
There were 2 Ilford athletes in action.
Ahmed Abdulle ran in heat 1 of the 5000m, was up with leaders throughout the race and finished in a new personal best time of 15mins 04.7 secs in 5th spot
In heat 2 of the 5000m Sam Rahman ran his usual well-judged race to come home 15th in 17 mins 28.3 secs.

Four Ilford runners competed in the second of the series of three ‘OrionForest 5’ races last Saturday.
The 5 mile, multi terrain course is a challenging one with a couple of sharp inclines, but conditions were ideal for running on a dry but cool morning.
First Ilford runner home, in 44th place with a time of 36:41 was DennisBriggs, followed by Billy Green in 56th place in 38:25.
Leading the ladies home was Julie Gillender in 132nd place for 54:37, followed closely by the evergreen Pam Jones in 134th for 54:45

 

Brentwood 10km including the Essex Championship
Blackmore
Sunday 2 July

This 10km road race is held over rural roads from the Essex village of Blackmore, which included the Essex Championship with Ilford AC winning 4 individual medals..
Amin Koikai led the Ilford AC challenge in 8th spot in 34 mins 13 secs and taking the bronze medal in the Essex championship for the M40 category.
Next home, giving 100& as usual, was Malcolm Muir in 21st with 36m 18s. One place back was Steve Philcox winning the Essex M50 age group in 36m 23s. Sam Rahman ran steadily to record 37m 12 for 29th and Neil Crisp gave a creditable performance in 41st, and 6th Essex M50, with 38m 40s.Terry Knightley came home 47th in 39m 03s and there was a bronze Essex medal for Declan Cullen in the M60 group as he came home 102nd in a new personal best time of 43m 59s Steve Parker was the 6th M60 home with 45m 09s for 121st.

The Ilford ladies team was fronted by Zuzana Sinalova in 149th place overall with 47m 10s. She was backed up by Nicola Hopkinson in 161st with 48m 05s and Dianne Crisp with 49m 33s for 183rd and the silver medal in the Essex F55 category. Julia Galea recorded 56m 48s in 258th, Frieda Keane 58m 32s for 268th and Pam Jones finished 292nd with 64m 39s. There were 311 finishers

Olympic Park
Sunday 2nd July*

Nine Ilford AC runners competed in this iconic 10k race which takes runners past all the major venues in the Olympic Park before finishing inside the Olympic stadium.
Whilst the Olympic Park offers great views for the runners it offers very little shade, which made it a tough run on a hot morning.
Star of the morning was Ahmed Abdulle, who followed up his 5k PB on Friday with a 10k PB on Sunday.
Not only was Ahmed first Ilford runner home he was also the event winner in a time of 32:48, beating his nearest rival by almost 2 minutes.
Second Ilford runner home, just 951 places behind Ahmed was club captain Billy Green in 48:58 closely followed by Anthony Young,1047th in 50:14.
The Ilford contingent then all came in thick and fast with Rhoan Gabbidon, 1375th in 51:48, Adnan Karim, 1410th in 52:00, Alan Pearl 1455th in 52:13, Carol Muir 3,917th in 1:04:50, Natasha Mansouri 3,955th in 1:05:05 and Brennie Gabbidon 5,481st in 1:19:13.

Southern Counties Senior Inter County Match

Two Ilford race walkers represent their county.

Ilford AC members Sebastian Parris (Essex) and Mark Culshaw (Middlesex) both put in excellent times in the 3km race walk for their respective counties at the senior 8 inter county track and field match on Sunday.

A long trip to west London at host surreys kings meadow athletic stadium and in hot conditions saw both men record good times.
In the A string Seb finished 3rd male in a pb of 16.01 and Mark recorded a seasons best of 16.34 to claim 4th.
Strong performances from the club helped the counties no end.
Essex men took 1st team and Middlesex men took 2nd team. On the day Essex were narrowly pipped into 2nd place in the combined gender overall prize with Middlesex finishing 4th.
