Hilly Fields, Colchester Saturday 4th January

There were a good set of results for Ilford AC in this season’s Essex
Cross-Country Championships at Hilly Field in Colchester, where the going
was firmer than was expected

Best result of the afternoon for the club came in the under 15 boys race
where Usamah Patel put in a storming run to take the bronze medal in 16m 49s
and was selected for the Essex team for the Inter-Counties Championship in
Nottingham next month. His training partner Jack Maher not his favourite
surface had a solid run for 21st place in the u/17 race.

for the 8km course. Breege Nordin was next across the line in 52nd with 39m
34s. Supporting her were Dianne Crisp in 60th with 40m 45s and Jenni Sheehan
placed 63rd in 40m 56s in a field of 122. Together they were placed 10th in
the team competition. There was however misfortune for Mel Jones who fell on
the first lap and broke her wrist.

Southwark Parkrun

Saturday 14 December

Here is the next instalment,

Dad and I took part in our fourth Park Run on the 14th. Dad was in good form
after another full week of running to and from work and his toe was starting
to feel much better after the op. We took our usual place on the starting
grid, anticipating a good time. The starting gun went, well actually someone
said go, and we were away. But what happened? Lots of people shot past us
before I had a chance to put on my scary face and we were well down the
field. I turned on the buggy motor and we were able to stabilise our
position at around 6:20 pace, but Dad was having trouble keeping up, so I
turned the motor off again and we settled into a much more realistic pace.
Fortunately, everyone else saw the error of their ways and slowed too.

Dad hooked on the tail of the 2 runners in front and this helped pull us
around. We were now able to enjoy the run and bask in the winter sun as we
cruised around the rest of the course. Nearing the finish, someone must have
been cooking eggs and bacon or something at the finish line, as everyone
around us including Dad started running really fast. We came in at 22:05, 8
secs up on last week. The eggs and bacon was a false alarm, but someone did
offer Dad a banana; I got a rice cake.

Southwark Park Run

Saturday 7 December 2013

Dad and I missed last week’s run as he made some excuse about having sore
muscles. Personally I think it was either because it was Southwark Park’s
run number 13 or possibly because there was a very fast VM55 visiting from
Exeter and Dad didn’t want to look like a slug. This runner looked
remarkably like Andy Catton, but when I suggested that it was him in
disguise checking up on us, Dad said that it couldn’t possibly be, as Andy
is a VM60!

After the last run, we talked tactics. I suggested that we fit rotating
blades to the buggy axles to stop runners overtaking us, but Dad thought
that this was un-sportsman like and said that I had to stay awake instead. I
agreed and so promised not to nod off this time. Dad also had promised after
last week to ‘practise’ before this race, so he didn’t have sore muscles
again. He said that he had done 46 miles running over the last week. This
must have been right as story times were really short and Dad was snoring
long before I was asleep most nights.

Dad started really strongly this time and I kept guard on runners trying to
sneak past us. We actually managed to pass a couple of runners as the
‘practise’ seemed to have worked. We steamed round the course at a great
rate of knots, but on lap 3, I succumbed to the smile of the lady behind and
let her pass us. I don’t think Dad minded this one slip. He kept strong
until the end and we finished 17th in 22:13, which was 44 seconds up on last
time. I said to Dad that if he kept this up, we would have the World Record
in the bag by summer. He wasn’t convinced.
