SOUTH OF ENGLAND ATHLETICS CHAMPS ASHFORD KENT Three Ilford junior middle distance athletes competed in these champs.Star performance came from 14 year old Harry Martin a PB in the 1500m heats rewarded him with a place in the final and the next day he went on to reduce his PB to 4-30-24 in the final, albeit out of the medals. CIVIL WALKER An Ilford AC walker has become Civil Service champion in their annual well-established 3,000 metres walk. Ilford’s Walking Section Captain STEVE UTTLEY journeyed to his native north-west to contest the title at Manchester on Wednesday, and maintained his current fine form. From the start he took command being unchallenged on route to breaking the tape in 15 minutes and 29 seconds, well ahead of silver medallist JOHN HALL who clocked 15.53. Orion Forest Five Saturday 3rd August Ilford AC had 3 runners in the last of the Orion Forest 5 mile races series held at Chingford on Saturday. Steve Philcox battled the tough undulating course to come home an excellent 7th place overall in 29.21and win both the top male vet 40 on the day and the series. Another double category winner was super vet Martin Clarke who knocked off over a minute from his last outing over the course to blast home in 37.31 for 61st to take the male 60 prize. OVER 4 DECADES ON – THE MEDALS KEEP COMING Ilford AC Life member BOB DOBSON, lived up to his status as an evergreen 50 Kilometres expert on a hot Saturday in Coventry when clinching a hard earned National bronze medal in the ultra-distance event. Former European and Commonwealth Games representative Dobson’s 1st National medal was a gold one in the same Championship event at East Ewell in 1970 – and 43 years later he’s still being called onto the presentation podium. The distance, 31 miles and 121 yards, to those unfamiliar with metric measurements is the longest athletics event in the Olympics – being 5 miles further than a marathon. MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN GO OUT IN THE MIDDAY SUN A trio of Ilford AC walkers, FRANCISCO REIS, STEVE UTTLEY and PETE RYAN were the pick of the Club’s contingent at Allianz Park on a blisteringly hot Saturday as they occupied 3 of the top 5 positions in a London Inter-Club Challenge 5,000 metres walk. The race started at 12 noon, and despite large stands each side of the track which encircles Saracens rugby union pitch, there was no shade to be had anywhere.
