It has been a full week for the endurance runners of Ilford AC but despite a busy programme the summer of success continues. Veterans AC Track & Field Championship Battersea Park 25 August Kevin Newell was the sole entrant for Ilford in the endurance events. He opened his account by winning the VAC Championship in the 1500m. In a race he led from start to finish and recorded 4m 55.04s to win the trophy and the gold medal for the M35 category. Newell was back on track again later in the afternoon for the 5000m, which attracted a stronger field than the 1500m, where he finished 3rd overall in 18m 10.09s. IN THE FRAME Ilford AC walkers filled 2 places in the frame at Saturday afternoon’s London Inter-Club Challenge 5,000 metres at North London’s Allianz Park Track in North London. From the “off” in slight drizzle, Hillingdon AC’s Polish walker Fabian Deuter and Ilford’s Francisco Reis disputed the lead until the West London athlete edged ahead after 3 circuits to open up a gap he would enjoy until finishing in 23.28, with the Ilford man 2nd in 24.23 by which time drizzle had progressed to rain! Ilford’s Captain Steve Uttley came 3rd in 26.26 while solid performances were put by Stuart Bennett & Steve Allen who were always close when filling 7th & 8th spots clocking 29.02 & 29.12 respectively. SOUTH OF ENGLAND ATHLETICS CHAMPS ASHFORD KENT Three Ilford junior middle distance athletes competed in these champs.Star performance came from 14 year old Harry Martin a PB in the 1500m heats rewarded him with a place in the final and the next day he went on to reduce his PB to 4-30-24 in the final, albeit out of the medals. Jack Maher in the 800m had a rough time in his race being tripped up on the 1st lap and then another athlete dropping out and impeding him on the 2nd lap leaving him with no chance of making the final finishing in 2-03-7.On form Usamah Patel had a very disappointing race suffering from stomach cramp in his 1500 heat …Read More

CIVIL WALKER An Ilford AC walker has become Civil Service champion in their annual well-established 3,000 metres walk. Ilford’s Walking Section Captain STEVE UTTLEY journeyed to his native north-west to contest the title at Manchester on Wednesday, and maintained his current fine form. From the start he took command being unchallenged on route to breaking the tape in 15 minutes and 29 seconds, well ahead of silver medallist JOHN HALL who clocked 15.53.
