NOW IS THE HOUR Ilford’s FRANCISCO REIS was the pick of Ilford’s contingent who contested the Southern Area 1 Hour Championship Walk at Eltham’s Sutcliffe Park track on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The format requires competitors to race walk as far as possible in 60 minutes around an athletics track and it was defending Champion Reis who set the pace for over 50 minutes with his only serious challenger, Olympian IAN RICHARDS (Steyning AC), nestled in some 30 metres in arrears. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE This is a newly formed league for 2013 where Ilford & Woodford Green & Essex ladies have formed a composite team covering the U/13 to U/20 age groups. Ilfords Jack Maher, 15, opened his account for the season with a 3rd place in the 1500 in 4:34.Tom King, 16, returning after a long lay off from the track had a creditable 4th place in the 800 in 2:15. FRANCISCO REIS GIVES THEM THE OLD 1-2 It was a busy Bank Holiday Monday for Ilford’s FRANCISCO REIS, who lined-up as a guest competitor at 12.30pm on Stevenage’s well-appointed Ridlinds End track, to contest Hertfordshire County’s 3,000 metres Championship. Bidding for a 3rd consecutive victory he stormed off, never to be troubled as he broke the tape in an excellent 14 minutes and 17 seconds, winning by some distance. After receiving congratulations from backslappers there was no resting on his laurels for the victor as he made Chesham in Buckinghamshire to line-up at 5pm in the annual Pednor Open 5 Miles, starting as defending champion.
