Royal Windor Triathlon 17th June 2007, Karen 3rd

Triathlete Karen Sindall competing for Ilford AC Tri woke early before her alarm on Sunday morning for the 9am women¹s elite start of the Royal Windsor Triathlon, Britain¹s premier and most popular event of the year with an overall entry of some 2500 competitors. It proved more than a worthwhile exercise as she completed the course in 2hrs14mins 22seconds to end up on the podium in 3rd place and scooped a major prize in the process. Sindall didn¹t relish diving into the River Thames for the start of the 1500metre swim course but she was soon heading the pack chasing a formidable lead being built up by the eventual winner Sam Herridge of Total Fitness Bath.

Such was the command of Herridge¹s swim that the lead was already nearly a minute and a half by the time of the swim bike transition. Jodie Stimpson of Birmingham TC had also got clear in second as the riders headed out on the bike course, with Sindall prominent in the chasing pack.

Herridge had stretched the lead to an unassailable 3minutes over Stimpson after the 40k bike section with the main chasers led by Sindall, and Eloise Crowley a further 3 minutes down the road. The run which was set against the magnificent backdrop of Windsor castle and the grounds of the picturesque Eton College saw Sindall disposing of the challenge of Eloise Crowley early on as she began to make inroads into the gap to Stimpson in 2nd. However Yvette Grice of Team Bodyworks XTC was sitting just behind moving the smoothest of all and now came through as both athletes overtook the flagging Stimpson on the 3rd lap.

The Ilford triathlete, always her own biggest critic, confessed to be slightly disappointed especially with being overtaken on her run which she considers to be her strongest discipline. Nevertheless she still managed to clock 38.15 for 10k in what was her first major triathlon for over a year and she now hopes to improve on her performance in next month¹s Corus Elite series event in Hyde Park.

Holten Triathlon - 17th July 2006 - Karen 5th

Ilford AC's Karen Sindall continued her preparations for the Salford World Cup in 2 weeks time with a gutsy 5th pace in the 22nd staging of the Holten Triathlon which was also celebrating its 5th year as an International ITU event. Karen was up against some quality international performers from South America and Eastern Europe all trying to earn points toward their 2005 world ranking and Olympic qualifying in 2008 and a share of the €25,000 prize purse.

Karen's performance was even more remarkable for earlier in the week she had spent 2 days in Oldchurch hospital with a severe stomach complaint and it was only late Wednesday night that she decided to run after consultation with her coach.

The course featured a one straight 1.5k (0.9-mile) swim, a hilly and technical five-lap 40k (24.8-mile) bike course and a four-lap flat 10k (6.2-mile) run. Most of the pre race hype had centred on New Zealands Evelyn Williamson yet the surprise female winner wass Mariana Ohata from Brazil.of the Dutch triathlete, Wieke Hoogzaad. The Polish Dederko and the Chech Radova rounded the podium off in second and third.

Following the swimming, a small lead group of four women formed with Karen 3rd out of the water in 20.56, followed closely by another group of twelve. After three rounds of biking, these two groups joined together. Karen was first out of the swim/run transition and held a slender lead of approx 15 metres for the first of the 4 laps. However it was now Ohata who had lost some ground on the bike that came through strongly to take the lead. Karen contested 2nd place with a group of 3 other girls before the events of the week and the heat began to sap her strength as she dropped off the pace. Nevertheless she emerged from the race as the the top British athlete ahead of Henrietta Freeman and she remains optimistic for Salford.

Ilford Ac's Karen Sindall continued her build up to the ITU Salford world cup with an impressive win in Saturday's Human Race Timex women's only triathlon held at Dorney Lake near Eton Wick, Berkshire. Sindall led a large field of over 150 competitors from start to finish in the main challenge event as she powered to the finish line in 1hr 34 minutes and 20 secs. Sindall made her intentions clear with the fastest swim of the day and although her nearest rival, Heather Williams of Cambridge Tri club, did manage to close the gap slightly on the bike section, the Ilford triathlete's class in the run was there for all to see as she took a full 3 minutes out of her main challenger.

Karen now seems to have put the injuries of the last couple of years firmly behind her as she continues her preparations for next month's prestigious Salford race and is approaching somewhere near her best form.

Windsor Triathlon 12th June 2006 - Karen 6th

Helen Tucker claimed the national national title in Sunday's National Elite Triathlon Championships held as part of the Royal Windsor Triathlon. It was however the performance of Ilford AC's Karen Sindall that was particularly pleasing for the Cricklefields based club. Set against the magnificent backdrop of Windsor Castle, Eton College and the majestic River Thames. The river swim is followed by a bike course that takes in a number of villages around beautiful Berkshire and returns through Windsor Great Park. The multi-lap run course winds around the Great Castle, over Eton Bridge and along Eton High Street, passing famous Eton College. The event takes in 900 years of British history.

Karen put up a tremendous battle finishing in a marvellous 6th position only 2 minutes adrift of the winner but somewhat disappointingly just missing out on the prize money. A group of six women had exited the 1500m swim closely bunched. They were led out by Kerry Lang followed by Julie Dibens, Tucker, Anneliese Heard, Raw and Vicky Holland. Karen led out the 2nd group with the recent winner of the Blenheim triathlon, Rosie Clarke, just behind. Julie Dibens took on the 40k cycle leg leading a group of around ten athletes into transition 2 with Raw and Tucker just a second behind and Karen in 8th place. The run saw Raw and Tucker quickly move to the front of the race. Karen worked hard on the 10k run to come through the field claiming the big scalp of Dibens, a regular on the ITU World Cup and Championship scene, and Vicky Holland in the last of the 3 laps.

Karen's performance was such that she now automatically qualifies for next month's ITU World Cup in Salford where she will once again do battle with the cream of the World's triaihletes.

Another Ilford triathlete Matt Herbert also went the full Olympic distance competing in the 35-39 category and finishing in an excellent total time of 2hrs 27mins and 13 secs. Matt's splits were 29.05(swim) 2.35(T1),1.10.10(bike), 2.06(T2), 43.14(run).
