Ilford AC ladies proved they are a force to be reckoned with when they
took the team prize in Sunday's High Ongar 10k race Although the very
pleasant off road course, was not hilly the terrain proved to be quite
testing with plenty of stony paths and potholes
Bree Nordin led the squad home in an excellent 4th place taking the
womens over 45 trophy in a very respectable time of 43mins 20secs. The
ladies race was won by
Wendy King in 40.07 2nd Sue Spong and 3rd Annette Musset. Other Ilford
women's positions and times were:-
8th Nicola Hopkinson 44.59
13th Cheryl Macdonald 48.11
15th Pam Jones 48.45
The
men's race was won by Bryn Reynolds from the Omega club in 35.23
with Dave Cox of Woodford Green 2nd in 3537. Ilford's improving athlete
Abdi Berleen ran a personal best breaking 40 minutes for the first time
clocking 39.35 for an excellent 21st place. Darren Bottrill also recorded
a pb finishing 53rd in 44.19.
Early Saturday morning at Bewl Water near Tunbridge Wells Ilford's elite
triathlete Karen Sindall easily won an Aquathon event sponsored by
Urbanrace Limited . Karen competed in the novice 750m swim and 5k run
event as a sharpener for her forthcoming ITU World cup event in Salford.
Recovering from a head cold Karen experienced some breathing
difficulties in the swim section but nevertheless emerged from the water
as leading woman some 15metres behind the male leader. Karen entered the
transition area in a time of 8mins and 3 secs and then sooon went into
the overall lead as she began the run.
From then on there was only one winner as the Ilford athlete sped away
from the rest of the field. Unfortunately a serious marshalling error occured
at the turning point and the whole field missed out a loop restricting
the run to only 2.5K.
In Sunday's British 10k London Run Ilford's Keelie Brooks was amongst
illustrious company in the form of the great Haile Gebrselassie. The
legendary Ethiopian was the runaway winner in 28mins and 12 seconds.
After making a very fast Keelie suffered at the 9k mark when a painful
stitch reduced her to a walk. Yet she should not be too disappointed
with her 47 minute effort as her training suggests there is plenty to
come off that time.
