Ilford AC's veteran mens squad
produced a great team effort to win the 3rd of their SCVAC Track
and Field fixtures at Watford's Woodside Stadium on Monday
night. The gauntlet was firmly thrown down to League
Leaders Barnet and District when the Ilford sprint trio of Alun
Jones, Lee Richards and Roger Honey all won their 100
metres opening track events in fine style.
With Jim Allingham, Roger Honey and Jim McNamee all placing
highly in the field events Ilford had built up a 10 point lead
going into the middle distance events. With something of a
makeshift team the club did surprisingly well in the 1500 and
5000 metres with Iain Campbell placing 2nd and 3rd and the duo
of John Batchelor and Martin Clarke both carrying hamstring
injuries hobbling round for valuable 2nd place points.
The pressure was now off going into the final event, a 1600m
medley relay which saw a majestic 800m run by Trent Parlk's
Larry Mangleshot. The club emerged as comfortable winners
running out 21 points ahead of nearest rivals Barnet. With
Barnet victorious in the first two fixtures there is now all to
play for going into the final match to be held at Hemel Hemstead
in 3 weeks time.
