Runners from Ilford AC were out
and about this weekend at a variety of venues.
On Saturday Laura
Swords competed in the Hackney Marshes 5km in hot
sunny conditions and acquitted herself very well on
a flat fast cross country course finishing overall
in 48th place in a time of 23 min 53 sec
which saw her finish as the 5th lady
home. All now bodes well for Laura for the
forthcoming cross country season.
On Sunday Terry Knightley and
Kevin Newell were in action in the Canvey Island
Rotary 10K Race on a tough multi-trrain course
comprising sea wall and tracks. Knightley finished
in 7th position in 38 minutes and 33 seconds
with Newell 13th position in 40 minutes and 39
seconds. The race was won by Thurrock's John
Green from Havering 90's Tony Pecararo in a field of
some 150 runners!
Elsewhere Sally Gillam travelled to Ely,
Cambridgeshire to compete in the Grunty Fen Half
marathon continuing her build up to the Abingdon
marathon in October. Gilllam targetted a time of 1hr
50 in the windy conditions nearly always present on
the open fenlands, and was therefore well satisfied
with her finishing time of 1hr 48 minutes 36 seconds
picking off people in the latter stages for 235th
out of 457 starters. The race was won by Neil
Addison of Shaftesbury Barnett in a slowish time of
70.43 with Colchester's Adrian Mussett in close
attendance with 71.03. Another Colchester athlete,
Jennie Roberts, took the womens race in 80.31.
