Malcolm Muir won a team gold for Essex and a career best 5th place in the national inter counties half marathon championships with an excellent time of 71 minutes 45 seconds.  Muir made the 200 mile journey to Hull to run in the wind and rain on the notoriously tough course containing such features as 'cardiac hill' which has been known to stop lesser athletes in their tracks.  Muir was joined by Billericay's Crispian Bloomfield who came 3rd in 70.38 and Springfield's Gary Chandler, 10th in 74.48 to get the coveted first place county team prize for Essex.  The course is said to add 2 to 3 minutes to runners' times and Muir will be looking to turn his current golden form to a sub 70 minute time over the distance.

Horndon on the Hill 10k - Singing in the Rain or more precisley 5 make good at Horndon on the Hill – Report by Neil Crisp

On a rather damp morning 5 of Ilford's finest made the short trip East to the Horndon Feast and Fayre, incorporating their Annual 10k. The good news from the starter was that the "hill" would only be negotiated once!!

The race was won by Bertie Powell of WG & EL in 32:09. Andy Catton made the most of a congested downhill start and had a small lead over Neil Crisp by the 1 mile marker. Crisp made a move returning up the "hill" and the two vied with each other for the next 3 miles. By the finish Crisp, 38:09 for 23rd, had worked his way clear of Catton, 38:33 for 24th. Both were pleased with their runs considering the testing nature of the course, especially the farm tracks.Chris Catton made a welcome return to the fray and was very pleased with his 42:25, which was good enough for 66th overall. Keith Ennis, 44:08 [91st] and evergreen Phil Postings, 59:29 [290th] completed the Ilford AC contingent.

    BMAF 5k - Horwich

Meanwhile Ilford superveteran, John Batchelor made the trek North to Horwich for the BMAF 5K  where arch-rival Steve James - now 69 years young  - got his revenge over him a for last year's track champs, winning the M65 title in 18mins 48secs.  Batchelor  could see his head bobbing up and down in front of him after about 2K but was unable to close the gap. Neverthelesss the Ilford AC man was pleased with his 2nd place in 18:57 on the basis of the training he’d been able to do so far. Batchelor will race next at the Serpentine 5k on Friday followed by the SCVAC on the following Monday.

Balogun and Giwa hit the big time – AAA’s Champs Bedford

Ilford sprints star, Aaron Balogun excelled on the national stage at the AAAs athletics championships in Bedford at the weekend.  He was pitted against the nation's best under 20 sprinters and used the opportunity well to break the 11 second barrier for the first time with 10.98 seconds and fourth place.  Moving into the semis, Aaron ran another consistent race for 11.07 but narrowly missed a place in the final.  Aaron then went on to record a classy time of 22.12 in the 200m on the Sunday which got him an outstanding 6th place in the semi-final.

He was joined in Bedford by Rachel Giwa, who also brought out her best performance of the year in the under 20s 100m to record 12.04 seconds.  The time got her an excellent 5th place and a narrow 0.17 seconds away from a place in the final.Malekout, Marvin and Madigan make hay while Hadler throws a storm

    Southern Mens League – Thurrock

Ilford Athletic Club came an impressive third place at the weekend's 4th round of the Southern Mens League, despite missing five of their top athletes.  Stars of the show were the club's sprinters who scored near maximum points.  The 100m and 200m distances were dominated by Marvin Tuffor (11.2 / 23.3) and Gary Madigan (11.7 / 23.5) into strong head winds, while Sam Malekout ran the race of his season with a battling run to overtake in the last few metres to win in 51.1 seconds and Bakr Al-Akku coming back from studies held his form well to record 56.1 over the quarter mile.  The 4x100m was never in doubt and despite safe changeovers all the way, Tuffor, Madigan, Simeon Stuart and Erik Obot recorded a seasons best over the distance of 44.7.  The 4x400m was a much closer affair, up against a strong Newbury squad.  Malekout powered into an early lead, while Al-Akku held the Newbury team to within a few metres and Tuffor took a slight lead on the third leg.  Last leg runner, Gary Madigan looked beaten as he was overtaken with half a lap to go but incredibly was able to come back as he battled strongly down the home straight to put pressure on the Newbury anchor leg.   The team eventually lost out by a whisker as Madigan recorded a lifetime best of 52.5 and an excellent team time of 3.34.6.

The other star of the show was veteran hurdling star, John Hadler, who used to rub shoulders with the likes of Steve Backley at Cambridge Harriers.  Persuaded to put on his athletics togs for his new local club, for the first time in 8 years, Hadler went through the throws card, scoring 11 points including a b string win in the hammer with 29.72m and an excellent shot putt of 10.26m.  A short training session during the 5000m and he was ready for his first occasion over the high hurdles for almost a decade.  Hadler showed his former grace and speed over the first 3 hurdles but a lack of practice put paid to his chances at the fourth as he took a bad tumble, but soldiered bravely on to finish for valuable points.

Mo Swamad (15) was in his usual excellent form in the middle distance, running a mature race on the shoulders of the leaders in the 1500m, recording a good quality 4.30.3 in the strong wind.  The wind put paid to fast times in the half mile as the leaders went through in 66 seconds.  The second lap of 56 seconds was too hot for Swamad but he held on well to record 2.10.0.  Also making a return after a long lay off was John Macdonald, who battled well despite limited training to record an impressive 2nd place in the b string 1500m in 4.33.8.  Darren Bottrill showed strength in the wind during the 5000m for another sub 18 minute time of 17.57.5.

Nathaniel Senior was battling against a sore back but worked hard for a good quality jump of 12.48 metres in the triple jump and 1.70m in the high jump.  Simeon Stuart and Sam Malekout scored heavily again in the long jump with two second places with 6.28m and 6.23m respectively, while Malekout equalled his personal best of 2.60m in the pole vault for the umpteenth time.

Ilford AC who are 4th in the league now, should be back to full strength for the last two matches, which should put them into contention for a promotion place.  The next match is on the 14th July in Luton.
