Ilford AC could only field a scratch squad in the Essex Veteran Road Relay Championships held at Colchester on Sunday afternoon. With many of their established stars either injured or unavailable it was left to Neil Crisp, Henry Ricketts and Steve Cheal to fly the flag for the A squad finishing half way down the field in 10^th place. A monumental hailstorm delayed the start by 10 mins and even when the first leg runners finally set off they had to contend with some very slippery and icy hailstones which were strewn across the Garrison track. Neil Crisp returned the quickest time for the club running 17.42 on leg 1 of the 4.6k 2 lap course. Henry Ricketts took over to battle the bitingly cold wind clocking 20.14 before handing over to Steve Cheal to close the team in a slightly slower 20.19. Graham Williams was the only member of an incomplete ‘B’ squad running the first leg in 21.52.
