Ilford
AC’s top woman triathlete Karen Sindall had a
last minute change of plan when cancelling an
ETU triathlon in Madrid to run the Southend 10k
on Sunday morning. In a race that Sindall had
won twice before she was now up against GB
International Danielle Sale of Orion and the
talented Harriet Scott of Havering. In an
interesting battle it was Sale who finally
emerged victorious clocking 35minutes 47
seconds. Sindall followed her not far behind
along the gruelling drag of the Southend
seafront in 36.31, a time incidentally shared by
snooker ace Ronnie O’Sullivan, with Scott only
15 seconds adrift in 36.46.
Sindall
confessed to being pleased with her race and
although things are going in the right direction
still feels she is someway off her best. With
this years triathlon season over she will now
concentrate on her running intending to compete
in the Essex Cross country League and the Essex
County 10k Championships in November.
Sindall
was just one of a bumper turn out of 26 Ilford
athletes competing.
The best of the men was club
captain Malcolm Muir who ran his best time for
the course 33.57 which placed him in 14th
position. Matt Herbert, another triathlete
returning to the running scene performed well to
record 37.39 with Terry Knightley just behind in
37.53. Club stalwart Andy Catton ran well to
complete the scoring for the men with 38.56
which also placed him 4th in the over
50s category.
With
nearly 2000 entries in this ever popular event
the race was not without organisational
difficulties at both ends of the race. Many
competitors were still congregating expecting to
be walked round as the starter began the race.
Problems were compounded at the finish where a
potentially serious medical emergency occurred
resulting in many of the finishing lanes being
restricted resulting in results from 48 minutes
onwards not being very accurate.
Other
runners and times were :- Ian Macdonald (39.29),
Steve Allen (40.43), Neil Crisp (40.47), Martin
Clarke (41.36), John Mackenzie (42.24), Rohan
Alexander (43.45), Duncan Turner (43.58), Keelie

In the

McNelis acquitted himself well by finishing in
37minutes and 37 seconds.
