Ilford AC's road runners were out in force on Bank Holiday Monday when a strong squad contested the annual Barking Park 5k Road race. In showery conditions Iain Campbell led the way home by finishing 3rd overall behind Billericay's Crispian Bloomfield and Chelmsford AC's Ryan Prout. Campbell's time of 16.07 secured him the 1st veteran spoils. Club Captain Malcolm Muir just missed out on a top 10 position having competed in the Mersea 10 miler the previous day. Nevertheless Muir still managed a time 16.46. Similarly in the women's race Ilford's Breege Nordin clocked 20.23 to take the veteran's prize in a race won by GB junior Danielle Sale of Orion in 17.34.
The performance of the morning came from 12 year old Alex Richards who whizzed round the course in a very impressive time of 18.54 to finish 36th overall taking the scalps of many accomplished senior runners in the process.
Other Ilford runners were Pete Clinch (17.40), Robin McNelis (17.48) Iain MacDonald (18.25), Darren Botterill (18.59), Andy Catton (19.01), Duncan Turner (21.11), Owen Phipps (21.52), Henry Ricketts (21.59), Nikki Martin (22.13), Steve Cheal (22.31), Sally Gillam (23.24), Lee Richards (24.28), Pam Jones (25.43), Paul Cheal (27.43), Andy Preston (28.24).

The following Sunday saw some very blustery conditions along the Kent coastline where Nikki Martin, Sally Gillam and Robin McNelis battled the elements and an extremely demanding course in the Thanet Coastal half marathon. Such was the nature of the course that only 3 men broke the 3hrs barrier in the acompanying full marathon. Unfortunately Robin had to pull out with a knee injury just after the 4 mile mark leaving the 2 Ilford ladies to carry the flag. Nikki and Sally running within 100 metres of each other for most of the race then had to face a strong headwind in the final mile of the race to finish in 1hr 50.32 and 1hr 51.10 respectively.

Nearer to home Andy Catton, Breege Nordin and Abdi Berleen contested the Dagenham off road race held in Hainault Forest. In a race purported to be somewhat over 5 miles both Andy and Breege took the superveteran prizes in times of just over 35mins and 38 mins respectively which Abdi clocking 37mins.

  • SWL Mile End Stadium - Report by Paul Cheal

On a breezy and overcast day, Ilford AC took 10 athletes to the final round of the Southern Women's Divison 3N match at Mile End. The final score for Match 2 of the double header match are as follows:

    1) West Suffolk - 158 Points
    2) Loughton      -  134 Points
    3) Forest          -  121 Points
    4) Ilford AC       -    85 Points

The star of the show has to go to Jamie Smith. Her improvement in the shot putt by over a metre was outstanding and her first hammer throwing competition after only a couple of coaching lessons was also exceptional.

In the U/13 Corina Bryce Arnold was the sole competitor. She ran very well coming home 1st in the 100m with - 13.9s, 2nd in the 200m with - 30.3s and 3rd in the 75m Hurdles with a time of - 15.4s.

The U/15 Girls had some good performances amongst them, Charlotte Deacon came 2nd in the shot which was very unusual for her with - 8m 67, a distance of - 16m 66 for 3rd in the discus and 16m 53 for 2nd in the javelin. The other Charlotte, Charlotte Smitheram did the same event coming 1st in the B-String shot with - 7m 70, 2nd in the discus with - 15m 51 and a throw of - 19m 81 in the javelin was good enough for 3rd. Aimee Jones ran the 100m finishing 1st with - 14.9s, the 1500m for the 1st time with - 6m 00.7s and 1st and the long jump distance of - 3m 91 for 2nd. Lydia Hall come home 1st in the 200m B-String with 30.6s, 1st in the 800m with - 2m 50s and jumped to a PB in the long jump with - 3m 91 for 3rd.

Sarah Kigozi ran solidly in her 100m coming 1st with 13.4s and tried the hammer for the first time with - 15m 56 and 3rd, whilst throwing - 15m 95 for a PB in the javelin. Jamie Smith was in fine form claiming some good performances. She claimed a very good distance in the hammer, her first competitive throw with - 22m 22 and 2nd, a sound throw in the discus with - 21m 02 for 2nd but surpassed all that with a tremendous PB in the shot putt with a length of - 8m 69 and 1st. Fionnuala Crowe competed in the 300m hurdles and 80m hurdles. She finished 4th in the 300 with - 60.4s and 17.2s and 2nd in the 80.

The sole competitor for the U/20's had Jessica Manning leaped to within 2cm's of her PB in the long jump for 2nd and putt a very respectable distance of - 8m 23 for 1st in the shot. All bodes well for her first attempt at the heptathlon in 3 weeks time at Thurrock. Clare Thake like Jessica was the only senior lady participating. She ran the 100m & 200m with 15.1s in the 100m for 4th and 33.0s for the 200m and 3rd. She also competed in the triple jump coming 4th with a distance of - 7m 18.

Finally to round of the day, there were 2 relay teams in the 4 x 100m. In the U/13's & U/15's we had (Corina, Lydia, Aimee & Charlotte.D) run well and finished with - 59.7s and 3rd. In the senior category we had (Jessica, Sarah, Fionnuala & Clare) who like there younger counterparts came home 3rd with a time of - 56.0s.

Well done to all who have competed for this league over the summer. Ilford finished 12th out of 15th the same as last year but with substantially more points. We have gained ground on many of the clubs above us and with a very young squad with very little input from senior members of Ilford we are gaining in experience and strength. If this continues as we are at the present then Ilford will undoubtedly in my view be moving up to gain access into division 2.
