• Vets 3000m - Kingsmeadow Norbiton

Ilford AC's John Batchelor ran a spectacular race in a low key 3000m field at the Kinsmeadow track at Norbiton on Wednesday evening. John who has been threatening to break the 11 minute mark for some time now did it with what was effectively a solo run from gun to tape. Batchelor's mark of  10m 50.7s easily beats the the British M65 "best on record" which stands at 11m 23.8s. However there is currently some doubt as to whether there were enough graded officials present for his time to be submitted as a British Age Record.
John, although obviusly delighted with his run was typically modest afterwards when he said :-"To put things in perspective, the World best is 9:45 by a New Zealander and the European best is 9:47 by a Dutch guy"

    Holten Triathlon - Holland

Ilford AC's Karen Sindall continued her preparations for the Salford World Cup in 2 weeks time with a gutsy 5th pace in the 22nd staging of the Holten Triathlon which was also celebrating its 5th year as an International ITU event. Karen was up against some quality international performers from South America and Eastern Europe all trying to earn points toward their 2005 world ranking and Olympic qualifying in 2008 and a share of the €25,000 prize purse.
Karen's performance was even more remarkable for earlier in the week she had spent 2 days in Oldchurch hospital with a severe stomach complaint and it was only late Wednesday night that she decided to run after consultation with her coach.

The course featured a one straight 1.5k (0.9-mile) swim, a hilly and technical five-lap 40k (24.8-mile) bike course and a four-lap flat 10k (6.2-mile) run. Most of the pre race hype had centred on New Zealands Evelyn Williamson yet the surprise  female winner wass Mariana Ohata from Brazil.of the Dutch triathlete, Wieke Hoogzaad. The Polish Dederko and the Chech Radova rounded the podium off in second and third.
Following the swimming, a small lead group of four women formed with Karen 3rd out of the water in 20.56, followed closely by another group of twelve. After three rounds of biking, these two groups joined together. Karen was first out of the swim/run transition and held a slender lead of approx 15 metres for the first of the 4 laps. However it was now Ohata who had lost some ground on the bike that came through strongly to take the lead. Karen contested 2nd place with a group of 3 other girls before the events of the week and the heat began to sap her strength as she dropped off the pace. Nevertheless she emerged from the race as the the top British athlete ahead of Henrietta Freeman and she remains optimistic for Salford.

Great Bentley - 5 miles Friday 14th July

3 Ilford athletes made their now traditional trip to the environs of Colchester to compete in Friday's Great Bentley 5 mile race series.
Malcolm Muir, despite admitting to a recent loss of form, managed his best time for 5 years finishing in an excellent 26.56 which was good enough for 5th place.  Former club President Tony Nixon who was watching the race remarked that it was Muir who was undoubtedly travelling the quickest of all the leaders and would have undoubtedly won it had he set off less cautiously at the start.
Martin Clarke and Sally Gillam also competed but were more along for the trip having having both raced for the third time in the space of 7 days. Nevertheless they both finished with respectable times of 33.20 and 38.04

Southern Women's League - Round 3 Twickenham - Report by Paul Cheal

SWL Please find below details of Round 3 of the SWL meeting at Twickenham.

On a clear and hot day a very small squad of 4 athletes made their way to the university track near Twickenham to compete in Division 3 North. Even though there was only 4 athletes they shone like the midday sun which was enough to record 4 PB's which you must agree is a very good performance.

In the U/20's Jessica Manning is improving all the time and jumped a good distance of - 4m 99 in the long jump for 1st and took part in her first 400m and finished again in 1st place with a time of - 60.5s.

The U/17's had two athletes. Rachel Giwa competed in the sprint double recording a time of - 12.9s in the 100m for 2nd  but went one better in the 200m not in position as she also came 2nd but recorded a PB with time - 26.3s. She also recorded a PB in the Javelin with a throw of - 18m 71. Shanise Anderson ran her 1st 100m and ran a respectable race to finish 2nd with - 14.4s, she did the long jump and came 1st in the b-string with a PB distance of - 3m 94 and threw the Javelin a PB distance of - 15m 92.

The only U/15 competitor for Ilford was Aimee Jones. She ran the 800m coming 2nd with a time of - 2m 48.3s and ran the 200m in a solid time of - 29.6s and 4th place. The other event was the long jump and she finished 2nd with a leap of - 3m 91.

The team finished of with a 4x100m relay and although it didn't count for points due to the age groups it was a good work out and they finished with a flourish coming home strong with a time of - 53.2s and 2nd.

Well done to all the girls and hopefully there will be more of a turn out in the next round at Peterborough on August 12th.

The next meeting for all the athletes combined though is the last round of the UKYAL meeting at Parliament Hill this coming Sunday 23rd. See you all there.
