• Press Report -  Vets AC Battersea, Prague Marathon, Blenheim Triathlon , SML,SWL - Cricklefields, Baddow 10

Ilford athletes had a busy week on road, track & field and triathlon.

On Tuesday night John Batchelor won the Vets AC 5 mile race at Battersea Park leading from start to finish - believed to be a Vets AC record as the first time an M65 has been overall winner.  The time was 30:55, which equals the fastest M65 in GB last year set by Steve James but was about 1 minute short of the M65 course record believed to be an incredible 29.55. Ilford had a double celebration when prolific race walker Steve Uttley won the walk.

A much travelled quartet consisting of Ilford AC duo STEVE ALLEN and MICKY SUTTON, former Loughton AC walker DENNIS JONES (now on the books of Pitsea Road Runners) and ALEX ALLEN (Team Manager and Chief Supporter) attended May's famous Prague Marathon last Sunday.   Micky turned in a PB 3.30, while Steve defied injury (which had forced him to scratch from the Flora London Marathon) to clock 4.24 while Dennis bettered his London effort by recording 4.50.

Saturday saw another excellent performance by Karen Sindall in the Blenheim triathlon. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the estate of Blenheim Palace Karen emerged from the 750m open water lake swim contesting the lead in a time of  10.38. Her old adversary Henrietta Freeman returning to serious competition after a 2 year break set the pace on tthe bike establishing a 30 second gap on the 1st of  3 tough hilly laps. With the weather deteriorating Karen started to suffer in the wind and cold but hung on bravely in the chasing group. The increasingly wet and slippery conditions put paid to the challenge of pre race favourite who crashed just i front of Karen forcing her ro take evasive action. By the end of lap 3 Cambridge Tri Club's Rosie Clarke had come through the pack with a superb ride and both Freeman and herself entered transition 1 minute ahead of Sophie Whitworth with Karen just behind in 4th place clocking 37.19 for the 10.3 mile bike course. Karen was then able to use her improved running form to quickly catch Whitworth quickly before easily moving away on the 2 laps. Unfortunately the leaders had too big a gap over the 5.2k course for Karen to make any impression as she settled for a comfortable but well earned 3rd position in a time of 21.39.

SML - Cricklefields -  Burrow spearheads Ilford charge

Craig Burrow pulled out an enormous throw of 48.78m in the javelin as Ilford's throwers dominated the second Southern Mens League match on a wet and windy day at the home track at Cricklefields.  There was also a welcome return for two quarter milers, junior star, Gary Smallman, who came second in his flat 400m in 50.9 and a first place for veteran ace, Wayne Hick who won his hurdles race in 63.1.

The throwers only dropped five points during the day, with wins and seasons best for Sol Anwar in the shot (13.22m) and Wesley Clarke in the hammer (40.52m) and an outstanding throw by Sam Malekout of 40.38m which deserved more than 3rd place in the B string.

There was also a welcome return for outstanding triple jumper, Richard (Jide) Olatunji, who took a break from his studies to reach 12.14m for 2nd place.  Nathaniel Senior's continues to show great class in the A string triple jump with a leap of 12.46m which also gave him a 2nd place.  Elsewhere in the jumps, debutant, Gull-Hassen Ditta, achieved an excellent 1st place high jump with 1.60m in the B string.

Strong winds did not suit the runners but despite a late scare by a determined Dartford runner, Malcolm Muir achieved his first League victory in the 5000m with 16:22.7.  Some early barging in the pack had caused Malcolm to make an early break and gain 60m on the rest and despite being caught later on, Muir had enough left to make a decisive last lap burst to win.  Half miler Mohamed Swamed belied his age and lack of experience by getting a personal best in strong winds in the 800m in 2:19.6.  Seasons bests were also achieved by Erik Obot (11.9) in the 100m, Sam Malekout (24.7) in the 200m and Bakr Al-Akku (55.6) in the 400m.  John MacDonald's grit in last lap pile ups is becoming his trademark, although he was not able to overcome strong opposition with his 800m (2:05.7) and 1500m (4:26.0).  Also providing valuable contributions were Salim Patel (12.6 in the 100m and 24.3 in the 200m), Darren Bottrill (4:58.4 in the 1500m) and Simeon Stuart (5.42 in the long jump).

Overall, Ilford were unable to close a narrow gap at halfway and ultimately finished 4th.  The next match will be on the 3rd June at Stevenage.

Other performances included:  Malc Muir (10.51.0 in the steeplechase), Sam Malekout (1.60m in the high jump), Pete Whiting (1.20m in the pole vault and 27.5 in the 110m hurdles), Wayne Hick (23.1 in the 110m hurdles), Craig Burrow (11.26m in the shot, 37.84m in the discus, 33.93m in the hammer), Sol Anwar (35.49m in the discus), Matt Maple (17.12.0 in the 5000m, 11:00.5 in the steeplechase, 71.8 in the 400m hurdles and 1.20m in the pole vault) and relay teams (4x100m in 48.0 and 4x400m in 3:45.8).

Malcolm Muir shook off the trials of the previous afternoon's efforts to take bronze medal in the highly respected Great Baddow 10 miler.  In wet and windy conditions, the leaders set off at a roaring pace but Muir managed to reel the pack back and by 6 miles, reached in just over 33 minutes, Muir was second and pulling back the leader.  However, by 8 miles, Billericay star, Crispian Bloomfield recovered to retake the second place, and Muir came through for a secure 3rd place in an excellent time of 55minutes, 41 seconds, a minute behind the leader, Springfield's Paul Dobson.  Ilford's second scorer, Matt Maple, overcame a pedestrian start to record a fast second five miles in 30:28 and an overall time of 62:38.  The team was made up by Abdi Berleen who recorded a lifetime best of 67:14.  Peter 'Energy pack' Spelman made up the Ilford squad in an excellent time of 71:10 minutes.
