Four
athletes
from
Ilford
AC made
their
annual
pilgrimage
to the
Essex
Coastline
to
compete
in the
Frinton
and
Walton
Half
marathon
on
Sunday.
On a
very
warm
morning
and on
a course blessed
with
gentle
sea
breezes
Martin
Clarke
suggested
he may
be at
last
over his
inherent
alcoholism
and
womanising
problems
leading
the club
home
with a
much
improved
run in a
solid
time of
1hr
29mins
58 secs.
In the
womens
race
Sally
Gillam
and Pam
Jones
both
came in
together
in a
time of
1hr 48.
16 secs,
the
latter
easily
winning
her age
category.
Another
athlete
returning
to form
was
Lyndsey
Barker
who was
2nd lady
home in
the
accomanying
5mile
run in a
time
just a
shade
over 35
minutes.
The
club's
premier
triathlete
Karen
Sindall
opened
her
season
by
testing
her
training
in the
21st
staging
of the
East
Grinstead
Triathlon
in
Sussex.
The
event
consists
of a
500m
swim
followed
by a 26k
bike
ride and
finishing
with a
5k run.
Karen
blasted
off with
a
particularly
impressive
swim in
a time
of 7.11
which
was 4th
best
time
overall
(including
the
men).
The bike
section was
also
good but
although
she
returned
the 2nd
fastest
women's
time she
was no
match
for
eventual
winner
Ruth
Hutton
of SLH
tri club
who
posted
an
exceptional
time of
nearly 4
and a
half
minutes
quicker. Karen
was
particularly
pleased
with a
strong
run off
the
bike clocking
19mins
33 secs
yet it
was not
good
enough
to close
the
deficit.
The
Ilford
triathlete
eventually
completed
the
course
in a
total
time of
1hr
16mins
49 secs
in a
fine 2nd
place, a
position
she
hopes to
improve
on
in next
week's
Blenheim
triathlon.
Ilford
had a
squad of
21
athletes
that
competed
over
day's 2
& 3 of
the
Essex
Champs
at
Chelmsford,
this
would
have
been
more if
is
wasn't
injury
that was
preventing
them
from
taking
part,
there
was also
mixed
fortunes
for the
ones
that
took
part.
On
Day
2
which
was
by
far
the
better
day
in
respect
of
the
weather
it
was
a
good
day
for
Salim
Patel
who
ran
a
strong
race
to
finish
3rd
in
the
100m
for
Bronze,
it
was
a
straight
final.
Aimee
Jones
in
the
U/15
Girls kicked
of
the
day
with
the
75m
Hurdles
and
ran
a
time
of -
15.7s
to
finish
8th
in
her
heat.
In
the
U/15
Boys
Liam
Leddy
ran
an
impressive
800m
and
finally
was
able
to
beat
his
PB
in a
time
of -
2m
32.1 by
over
7.5s,
finishing
8th
and
Vivek
Joshi
ran
a
good
time
of -
2m
26.4s
for
6th
in
his
heat,
which
was
good
as
he
has
not
got
back
to
full
fitness.
Jerrell
Alleyne
stepping
up
in
age
group
to
U/15's
ran
in
the
100m.
He
found
the
competition
hard
but
was
still
able
tio
record
a
time
of -
13.1s
to
finish
4th
in
his
heat,
unfortunately
it
wasn't
good
enough
to
qualify.
From
that
he
had
to
make
his
way
to
the
Long
Jump
where
he
recorded
a
distance
of -
4m
83
and
7th.
In
the
U/17
's
Bakr-Al-Akku
ran
the
400m
and
finished
in -
55.51s
for
7th,
while
in
the
100m,
Ozi
Nzeako
and
Nathaniel
Senior
ran
sound
times
of
12.96s
and
12.80s
respectively
for
7th
&
6th
in
there
heats.
Lastly
Aaron
Balogun
ran
in
the
Junior
Men
100m.
In
the
heat
he
ran
well
to
finish
1st
with
a
time
of -
11.15s
a PB
and
quickest
time.
In
the
final
however
it
didn't
go
to
plan.
In a
very
tight
final
tragedy
struck
about
20
metres
from
the
finish
whilst
in
contention.
A
reoccurrence
of a
hamstring
injury
forced
him
out
and
into
the
St
Johns
Ambulance,
what
a
pity
as
he
was
doing
so
well.
In
the
U/15
Girls
as
well
was
Charlotte
Deacon.
She
was
competing
in
the
Shot
Putt.
Unfortunately
Charlotte
was
not
able
to
reproduce
her
distance
of
last
week
and
although
making
the
final
with
a
further
3
throws
only
managed -
8m
27cm
to
finish
in
8th.
Sarah
Kigozi did
well
in
the
100m.
She
ran
a solid
time
of -
13.5s in
the
heat
to qualify
for
the
final.
In
that
she
came
home
7th
in a
better
time
of -
13.34s.
The
last
member
to
compete
was
Jessica
Manning
in
the
Junior
Women
Long
Jump
and
100m.
In
the
Long
Jump
she
was
frustrated with
her
run-up
and managed
a
distance
of -
4m
83 for
7th
and
ran
well
in
the
100m.
Day
3
was
overcast,
grey
and
cold
not
ideal
for
athletics
in
many
ways.The
star
of
the
show
was
Nethaniel
Mitchel
Blake.
Not
happy
with
his
medal
from
Day
1 he
ran
a
reasonable
cautious
time
of -
13.78
for
1st
in
heat
of
the
100m.
However
this
changed
in
the
final
and
with
a
brilliant
and
competitive
race
came
home
2nd
for
SILVER
with
a PB
of -
13.15s. Andy
Carle
in
the
Javelin Rob
Legon
and
Liam
Leddy
in
the
Shot
Putt were
the
first
to
take
part.
Andy
in
the
U/15
Javelin
was
slightly
below
par
but
still
managed
to
throw
a
distance
of -
31m
61
for
5th.
In
the
Shot
Putt
Rob
Legon
although
daunted
by
some
very
powerful
throwers
put
a
brilliant
PB
of
over
65cm
for
a
distance
of -
8m
74
for 7th,
Liam
Leddy putt
- 4m
93.
The
other
U/13's
saw
Alex
Richards
and
Alex
Legon
ran
the
800m.
Alex
Legon
ran
well
and
completed
the
distance
in -
2m
53.16
for
7th
in his
heat.
Alex
Richards
ran
well
and
considering
he
only
had
his
appendix
out
just
over
3
weeks
ago
he
ran
a
time
of -
2m
40.17s
to
come
3rd
and
qualify
for
the
final
a
remarkable
performance.
In
the
final
he
was
good
enough
to
match
his
time
with
- 2m
40
for
6th. Vivek
Joshi
and
Mohammed
Swamad
ran
in
the
U/15
Boys
400m.
Vivek
did
well
and
finished
in -
61.77
for
4th
in
heat
and
a PB
by
over
5sec.
Mohammed
went
that
bit
faster
to
record
a
time
of -
59.69
for
5th
in
heat
and
also
recorded
a PB
by
just
over
3
secs.
He
also
qualified
for
the
final
but
Vivek
was
unfortunately
in a
slower
heat
not
to.
The
final
Mohammed
ran
slightly
slower
but
still
managed
to
come
7th
in a
time
of -
1m
01.61s.
Simeon
Stuart
and
Nathaniel
Senior
in
the
U/17
Boys
both
competed
in
the
Long
Jump.
Simeon
leaped
a
distance
of -
5m
82
for
5th
and
Nathaniel
came
9th
with
- 5m
62.
In
the
girls
U/15
Aimee
Jones
ran
a
800m
and
finished
in a
time
of -
2m
42.8
for
7th
in
heat
whilst
Lydia
Hall
was
3rd
in
her
heat
with
a PB
for
- 2m
36s
but
was
unlucky
to
miss
out
as a
fastest
loser.
Lydia
also
di
the
high
jump
and
is a
closely
fought
contest
was
unlucky
with
her
3
attempts
at
1m
40
and
had
to
settle
with
joint
5th
at a
height
of -
1m
35.
Last
to compete
were
Sarah
Kigozi
and
Laura
Townsend in
the
U/17
Girls.
Sarah who
was
below
par
by
her
own
personal
standards
and
could
only
manage
- 4m
19
in
the
Long
Jump.
Laura
though
ran
very
well.
Having
had
a
torrid
time
recently
with
a
foot
injury
she
was
able
to
produce
a
seasons
best
of -
46.12s
in a
straight
final
of
the
300m
with
no
sign
of
the
injury,
thankfully.
Meanwhile, the small squad of senior athletes took on the long distance events. Malcolm Muir added to his growing county medal collection with an excellent silver medal and personal best in the 3000m steeplechase. Having led for most of the race, he was not strong enough to hold off the fast recovering Rob Warner from Havering but finished with an excellent 10.23.52. Behind him, and with his first county medal, Matt Maple received a bronze, in 10.32.39. In the longest race of the weekend, Malcolm battled with club colleague Iain Cambell in the 5000m. Neither Campell nor Muir could compete with the lightening pace going on up front, which started off at 13.20 pace, fast enough to lead the British rankings. Campbell always had a commanding lead over his younger compatriot to finish in 5th in 15.48.63 and despite a fast last kilometre of just over 3 minutes, Muir who was 6th in 16.05.17 could not catch the veteran legend. The initial pace slowed after 200m but the race was still won in an impressive 14.53 by Billericay's Jamie Nunn.
Well
Done
to
all
those
who
took
part,
better
luck
next
year
for
some
of
those
athletes
that
were
so
near
to
medal
success
and
congratulations
to
the
medal
winners
and
athletes
who
achieved
their
personal
bests.
