Rob Nixon returned to strengthen Ilford AC men's squad in the 4th Essex Cross Country League fixture held at Great Notley Country Park on Saturday. Nixon braved the very cold conditions to finish a brilliant 8th on a tough and demanding course involving many steep climbs, ditches and rough scrubland sections. Club captain Malcolm Muir supported him well with a gutsy 13th position after going through a rough patch in the middle of the race.

However the most pleasing part of the afternoon were the performances of two of the club's stars of yesteryear as Andy Catton(71st) and Tony Nixon (80th) battled against the effects of long term injuries. All now bodes well for Essex veteran's race to be held at Chingford next Saturday and together with the likes of Martin Clarke (81st) and John Platt (96th) the over 50's squad should pose a significant threat. Other finishers were debutante Wesley Charles (93rd) Henry Ricketts (104th) and Graham Williams (105th).

In the womens race Bree Nordin led the women home in 24th position. The squad packed strongly with Keelie Brookes 28th  Sally Gillam 42nd and the evergreen Pam Jones 48th completing the scoring.
In the junior races some good efforts came from the young athletes taking part. There were two debutantes with Daniel Juffs running well finishing 37th in a time of 18.56 in the under 13 girls Sarah Kelly running a time of 23.18 and finishing in 31st in the under 15 girls. Also in the under15 girls Lydia Hall continues to improve finishing 18th in 16.06. Finally in the Under 13 Boys Ilford had two runners Alex Richards finishing 10th in 11.18 and Liam Leddy 28th in 12.24.

Ilford AC's superveteran John Batchelor ran 19.54 at the "Last Friday of the Month" Serpentine 5k in Hyde Parke to easily scoop the over 60's award.
