Over
500 athletes contested
the Essex 10k
Championships at
Melbourne Pk Chelmsford
where Ilford AC narrowly
missed out on the mens
bronze medal by a mere 4
points. Iain Campbell's
8th placing overall in
33minutes 10 secs earned
him the top veteran spot
and an Essex Gold medal
for the MV40 category.
He was well supported by
Malcolm Muir who ran his
fastest 10k time for 5
years clocking 33minutes
36 secs and 11th place.
Ashley Pearce completed
the scorers in an
excellent 40th place.
His 36.17 could have
been a lot faster if he
hadn't taken a wrong
turning during the race.
Terry Knightley made a
welcome return to
competition with a solid
37.32 just 2
places
ahead of triathlete Matt
Herbert whose
37.36 was
a personal best.
Abdi
Berleen ran well
recording 39.30 with
John Mckenzie 41.26 and
Darren Bottrill 41.28
battling it out not far
behind. Duncan Turner
weighed in with another
personal best of 44.23.
Graham Williams ran an
excellent 45.29 to take
an Essex silver medal in
the male vet 60
category.
In
the womens race Sally
Gillam shaved a minute
from her personal best
to finish in 46.54 which
gave her a top 10
position in the FV35
category. Debutante Jo
Funk ran 61.23.
Sunday's ideal running
conditions saw 2 Ilford
AC Ladies competing in
the British Masters 10
mile road championships
at Bishops Stortford.
English international
Pam Jones confessed to
finding the going
difficult on a multi
terrain course
comprising road, stony
paths and a grassy
section. Nevertheless
she still managed to add
to her impressive
collection of awards by
taking the gold medal in
the FV65 also getting
the better of the FV60
winner in the process.
The
course posed no such
problems for Nicola
Hopkinson who once again
improved upon her 10mile
personal best crossing
the line in 72 minutes
and 15 seconds.
Nikki Martin was the
only Ilford AC
representative in the
pretigious Brighton 10k
where she acquitted
herself extremely well.
Despite only recently
returning from injury
Nikki ran strongly to
break her personal best
with a time of 43.04 and
suggesting there is
plenty more to
come.
