Braintree
Hainault Forest Country park was the venue for
Sunday's 2nd running of the Dagenham 88 Runners 5M off
road race. Bright sunshine greeted the entrants as they
pondered the 2 lap course around Hainault. With a 50%
increase in entries on last years event some 118 runners
lined up for the tough and hilly course. Unforseen
hazards like a bees nest make the course even tougher
but that never stopped Tony Pecoraro of Havering 90's
defending his crown. Tony finished the course in a
excellent time of 31 minutes 42 seconds.
Ilford AC's Terry Knightley finished in 2nd Position
in a time of 32 minutes 58 seconds which won him the
First Veteran (MV40) Trophy.
Next In for Ilford was Darren Botterill in 37 minutes
20 seconds followed by Breege Nordin in 39 Minutes and
30 seconds and then Suki Jandu in 49 minutes 26
seconds. The Ladies race went to Julia Lewis who finished
in a time of 35.50.
Ilford Ac's super veteran John Batchelor is fast
returning to fitness since being dogged by injury
problems over the last year. John ran 19:23 on the road
last Friday at Serpentine 5k and followed this by an
impressive win in the male 60 category in the blazing
heat of Sunday's Vets AC 5000m Championship.
Southern Women's League - Braintree (as reported
by Paul Cheal)
On
Saturday the Ilford Ladies and girls took part in their
last track meeting of the season @ Braintree, in the
Division 3 North. The meeting was a double header with
Ilford up against Braintree & Forest. The squad was made
up of 1 Senior athlete, and 8 athletes of u/17,u/15 &
u/13s.
Sarah Kigozi out shone all the other athletes with good
performances in both the 100m & 200m. Sarah started with
a powerful run in the 100m coming home in fine style in
a time of - 13.1sec, shaving 0.3sec of her previous
best, and finishing in 1st place. Not content with that
Sarah completed the sprint double with yet another PB in
the 200m coming home first with a time of - 27.4sec
again 0.3sec of her previous time. She then went on to
throwing the javelin and was pleased with 1st again.
Julianna Dougan ran the 100m as well and producing her
best time for a while coming home in 2nd place with a
time of - 13.4sec just outside her PB. Julianna then
went onto compete in the shot put and discus finishing
in 3rd place in both respectively. Clarissa Dougan threw
slightly below par in the discus & javelin but still
recorded a 1st in javelin & 3rd in discus.
Lydia Hall who has some injury worries took part in the
high jump and was a good performer leaping to a height
of 1m 30cm to finish in 1st place. Aimee Jones who was
competing a day before her 13th Birthday rang a very
reasonable 800m. It was a very close race and Aimee was
just pipped at the line for 2nd coming in at a time of -
2min 40.3sec. The other u/13 girl competing was Kirsty
Nweze, her debut in the southern women's. Her long jump
was solid and the leap of - 3m 98cm was good enough for
2nd place, just shy of her PB. Kirsty then took part in
the 200m and was equally good running a time of -
29.6sec coming 2nd. They rounded of with a 4x100m relay
(Julianna, Clarissa, Kirsty & Sarah) finishing with a
time of 55.05sec and a 2nd place.
Jessica Manning the u/17 was coming back after missing
sometime of training. In the long jump although missing
her first 2 jumps corrected her stride pattern to make a
leap of - 4m 65cm and a 3rd place. In the Javelin she
threw - 22m 77cm to finish 1st and had a go at the shot
putt for the first time. With this she was still able to
perform well putting a distance of - 7m 59cm to finish
2nd. Our final competitor was our only Senior athlete.
The recently married Clare Thake who had not long
comeback from holiday did well in all the events she
took part in. In the 100m she finished 3rd and 200m was
again the same result. Clare then went onto perform in
the field. Her shot putt of - 5m 68 gave her a 1st
place. The Javelin was a 3rd place and for the first
time Clare had a go at the hammer finishing again in 3rd
place. With a few coaching lessons I think Clare will be
able to get the hang of it.
