MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN GO OUT IN THE MIDDAY SUN A trio of Ilford AC walkers, FRANCISCO REIS, STEVE UTTLEY and PETE RYAN were the pick of the Club’s contingent at Allianz Park on a blisteringly hot Saturday as they occupied 3 of the top 5 positions in a London Inter-Club Challenge 5,000 metres walk. The race started at 12 noon, and despite large stands each side of the track which encircles Saracens rugby union pitch, there was no shade to be had anywhere. Ilford Retain National Team Title For a 3rd Consecutive Season Ilford retained their National 10 Kilometres walk team title, for a 3rd consecutive season, at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit on Saturday 10 July. The scorching temperatures of recent weeks were relieved slightly by a light breeze and a short overcast period, but temperatures were still uncomfortably high as the field set off on the first of five 2kms shuttle laps, designed to avoid the hillier parts of the circuit. Francisco Reis, Ilford’s Portuguese and UK International set off with the leading bunch and established himself in 4th place early on, a position he held until the finish in a time of 50 minutes 51 seconds. The Ilford Vets Track and Field team travelled to Hemel Hempstead for the fourth and final leg of the season on Monday 8 July. The evening started with the 2000m walk where Dave Ainsworth competed in the A string finishing fourth in 14.16.5. Francisco Reis competing in the 50 plus category dominated the event finishing first overall in 9.19.7. In the 800m Malcolm Muir had to work hard down the final straight to win the A string in 2.12.9. Kevin Newell covered the B string finishing third in 2.29.1. Rob Sargent put in a fine performance to home third in the 50 plus age group in 3.05.4. Malcolm and Kevin ran the 200m in 28.4 and 33.8 to finish sixth …Read More
